The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is advising consumers not to purchase and to instead choose generic Viagra, the first of its kind in the battle against erectile dysfunction (ED).
In a letter published Friday in theNew England Journal of Medicine, the agency said the drug’s approval could result in “potentially higher prescription drug prices, increased health care costs, and a potentially harmful effect on the public’s ability to buy and use the drugs.”
“The FDA’s review of an industry-leading study of Viagra,” the letter said, “is the first step toward ensuring the safety and efficacy of a drug approved for medical use under the current Food and Drug Administration rules.”
Since its approval in 1998, Viagra has become the most prescribed medication in the U. S. and the third-largest U. drug market, with more than $2 billion in sales.
“The FDA’s review of this study is the first step toward ensuring the safety and efficacy of the drug approved for medical use under the current Food and Drug Administration rules,” the letter said.
FDA spokeswoman Sandy Johnson said that the drug’s approval was “based on a thorough review of the scientific literature and on an assessment of the drug’s benefits and risks.”
The FDA has also said it is reviewing the drug’s labeling and other documents to ensure it meets the standards set by the agency.
The agency will make its final decision on the drug’s status on Nov. 18, after the agency reviews the study results and the agency’s regulatory authority. Its final decision will be made during the next two years.
